WordPress 2.9 Has Finally Arrived

20 December 2009

During the weekend I updated no less than 15 WordPress blogs. The operation went as smooth as a baby’s butt, and hours later, plugin updates starting pouring in. Thanks to the mass updater feature, I was able to install them all at once.

If you’re a developer and you’re interested in what’s new when a plugin updates, check out Changelogger, a plugin which:

[...] shows the latest changelog right on the plugin listing page, whenever there’s a plugin ready to be updated.

The changelog on a plugin update is being shown if the plugin author added a changelog section based on the new readme.txt example file to their plugin.

If you need to optimize your database before updating, but you don’t have access to a phpMyAdmin interface, use Portable phpMyAdmin plugin.

I’m sure a maintenance release will follow in January, perhaps to improve the new features (I still don’t like the post thumb feature and I still use the Get the Image plugin), or to fix the omnipresent bugs. Don’t get me wrong, but new releases always bring new and fresh bugs.

Happy 2.9.

Update Spree

I have been updating some of my web sites, trying to make them validate as XHTML Strict. What I’ve learned from this routine work?

1. Do not insert a <div> tag into a <p> tag. It won’t validate. Try a <span>.
2. Use <p> or <div> to surround <input>, <select> and <textarea> tags.
3. Use <label>, more for accessibility than validation.

RuneScape Updates

10 July 2008

Years ago there was a game I loved playing and I spent hours and hours doing quests and hunting with my parties. This game was called RuneScape. Rewritten and renamed, the first version of RuneScape was released to the public on 4 January 2001 in beta form. It has a free-to-play option, and a simple interface that is accessible on most web browsers.

Recently, RuneScape became 3D. Well, as 3D as Java can be, but anyway, the changes are amazing. Here is a movie from their recent update, and a quick note:

RuneScape has been reworked and now looks better than ever! If you are a member, you will be able to access this update by following the directions below. If you are a free player, you can expect to be playing RuneScape HD as soon as the Beta period is over. Free players who select RuneScape HD will receive a preview of the new graphics, meaning they can see how it runs on their machines, but will be unable to play in it.

I miss those days, when I had nothing to do all day but play RuneScape.

Tons Of Updates

9 July 2008

As you can see from the dashboard section with RSS updates, both WordPress and WordPress MU are updating. I am glad to hear this as I’m trying to keep all my blogs updated.

One problem I’ve had with my WordPress MU installation was the lack of plugins’ update reminders, so I had to look for the them manually. As specified,

Plugins in wp-content/plugins/ are version checked like in WordPress. mu-plugins isn’t covered just yet.

No worry for that, the main plugins were the problem. I will keep you updated on my changes. I have some aggressive promotion in mind, and I’m getting it ready.
